Uppsala University (Sweden)

Uppsala University is Scandinavia's oldest university with over 40,000 students, 550 full professors, and an additional 3,000 teaching and research personnel. In the ERA project, UU is represented by the Department of Information Technology, which hosts a broad range of research activities in computer science, scientific computing, automatic control, signal processing, and other related areas. The department has about 200 employees (including PhD students), 80 faculty, including 25 full professors and about 90 PhD students. 116 PhD and 95 Licentiate degrees awarded between 1999 and 2009. 3,600 undergraduate students take courses at the department annually. A number of research centers are associated with the department. Examples include the Vinn Excellence Center WISENET, hosting multidisciplinary research in wireless networks, the UPMARC center of Excellence for basic research on software for multicore architectures, the government national strategic research center eSSENCE for research in e-science, larger grants on software development for embedded mulcitore systems (CoDER-MP) and wireless sensor networks (PROFUN).
